“I’m just not comfortable around people who aren’t like me…”
“Hold my beer and watch this…”
Three statements many would attribute to rednecks…but are they entirely true? That’s what we’re talking about this week on Men in Gorilla Suits.
We begin by talking about the first redneck we ever knew. Recently on the show, we talked about stereotypes. After our first redneck encounter, we discuss whether or not rednecks live up to all the stereotypes.
After that, we talk about what we admire the most (and least) about rednecks, before moving on to whether or not rednecks are inherently neo-conservatives hellbent on talking about their beliefs at every turn.
Find out if we’ve ever considered ourselves rednecks. (Hint: Christopher has been noodling.) One doesn’t have to be a redneck to have appreciated fine, redneck culture like tractor pulls, dirt track racing, or blowing shit up with dynamite. Find out what rednecky things we’ve been part of.
Rednecks and pop culture go together like Jack Daniels and pork rinds. Find out our favorite redneck depictions in pop culture before we talk about our all-time favorite redneck(s). And jumping back to pop culture, we share what we each deem to be the ultimate redneck tune — and then jump to our all-time favorite stories about rednecks.
We close out the episode asking if other countries have rednecks and what the future for rednecks in America looks like.
As always, you’re more than welcome to chime in about anything related to this topic in the comments below.

Growing up, I LOVED every character from the original Dukes of Hazzard. 🙂 Still do!
In other news, my hubby is a huge NASCAR fan, loves country music, lives in a trailer park (with me, of course!) and “inspects” his guns and rifles every day. I can’t explain it.
OMG “Country Boy Can Survive” – I cringe every time hubby plays that. lol

EVERY character? Even Vance and Coy?

Yeah, I was a big fan of the original Dukes of Hazzard as well. Like you, every single character! They were all just perfect.
I live near Texas’s NASCAR track, but I’ve never been to a race. Growing up, though, I watched many a race with my dad, who did all he could to put in my that Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough should be my heroes. We went to many a dirt track race and smaller things like that, though. And yep, even a rodeo where there was a pig chase for kids, and it was backwater enough that they told the audience the first person over the fence would get a chance at winning $100 if they could ride a bull for only 5 seconds. Fortunately, even though he tried, my dad was too drunk to scale the fence and have his shot.
I went through my country music phase and can probably still sing along to “A Country Boy Can Survive.” I guess if any good came out of that, I can at least say I saw Willie Nelson live in the late 70s. And I’ve seen some good explosions (and the best smoke bombs). My dad knew people who worked in quarries, and another guy who worked on the sewer department for Independence, Missouri. They used to use these wonderful smoke bombs to check for leaks in the system, and 4th of July up there was nothing until one of those was going.
I think it’s why I can’t be too hard on rednecks. Sure, there are the racist, mean-ass rednecks, but I have known a lot of rednecks who were very live-and-let-live and just out to have a stupid-fun good time, even if it meant the occasional loss of fingers and stuff. Looking back, I think my dad had more friends with missing fingers than missing teeth…
